  • NOTE: What Happens to Existing LPG Bottles and Gas When You Move?

If your new home already has LPG bottles installed, those bottles are usually owned by the existing supplier. When you move in, you generally have two options: 1. Stay with the existing supplier This is often the quickest option, but pricing and rental fees may not be competitive. 2. Switch LPG providers If you switch, the existing supplier will collect their bottles and the new supplier will install their own. In many cases, unused (full) bottles may be refunded or credited, depending on the supplier’s policy. Gas remaining in partially used bottles is usually not refunded, which is why many households choose to switch when bottles are running low. Policies vary by retailer, so it’s important to confirm what applies to your situation.

We stay in touch until everything is sorted.

Switching LPG Providers

1. Confirm LPG bottle installation

Check whether the previous owner installed the standard two-bottle 45 kg setup (common in Australian homes). A dual-bottle system means when one bottle empties you switch to the other via the automatic change-over valve and then reorder the empty one.

If you find only one bottle, or a smaller size, you may only be using 9kg sized bottles.

2. Inspect safety clearances and condition

The bottles must be correctly installed: upright, restrained, away from ignition sources, and the regulator and pigtails must be compliant. According to ELGAS, key clearances include 1 m from doors/windows, 0.5 m above, and for tanker-refill operations up to 3.5 m clearance from ignition sources. If the bottles look corroded, unlabeled, too close to the property, or lack a licensed gas fitter tag, have a professional inspect them before using.

3. Understand the total cost (bottle price + rental fee)

When comparing LPG gas suppliers, you need to look at both the price per bottle and the annual bottle rental fee.

When you’re comparing LPG suppliers, it’s not only the per-bottle cost that matters, there’s often a rental fee on each bottle. Promotional pricing may be available for new customers in some areas, while standard pricing can be higher depending on location and supplier.

In other words, when you’re moving house, you may be inheriting the previous owner’s supplier, and you should check whether you’re paying competitive rates.

4. Delivery / supply reliability matters

Price is one thing, however, if your new supplier cannot deliver quickly when you run low, or schedule times are inconvenient, you could end up switching out of convenience anyway.

When you’re moving, feel free to ask us: how often are deliveries made in your suburb? What happens if there’s a storm or access issue? What’s the expected wait time?

5. Consider your switching options

If the previous owner’s supplier is locked in or you’re unsure about pricing, remember that you can switch. Some LPG suppliers offer move-in or new-customer promotions, which may include discounted first refills or reduced rental fees. Availability varies by suburb.

We always check whether such promotions apply in your suburb, they can give you some extra savings just when you move in.

Make sure you check: will you need to return the existing bottles? Is there a termination fee? Are there specific move-in promotions (e.g., free rental for first year)?

Quick Cost Snapshot: What Does a 45kg Bottle Really Offer?

  • Big Capacity

A full 45 kg bottle holds approx. 88 litres of LPG.

  • More than a month long of consumption

Usage varies depending on your appliances, but for example, if you run a 16 L/min hot-water system for 20 minutes a day, one 45 kg bottle might last you around 52 days.

  • Two-Bottle Changeover Setup

Given typically homes have two bottles installed, you benefit from the change-over valve setup: one bottle in use, one waiting, reorder when needed, minimal risk of gas shortage.

Why the Moving House Phase is ideal for Review

You’re in a prime position to save and optimise your pricing because:
  • You’re starting with a blank slate (or near blank), so you can choose your supplier rather than inherit one.
  • You can inspect what’s already installed and decide whether upgrades or service changes are needed.
  • You often have a little extra time (pre-move or immediately post-move) to coordinate delivery and installation because the home is still empty or in transition.
  • Promotions are often available for new customers (ELGAS highlights first-time deals, Origin flags streamlined move-in processes).
